First to fire: air defenders conduct first NATO live fire with SGT STOUT in Norway

ANDØYA, Norway — Soldiers of the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment recently joined NATO allies in the Arctic Circle for Exercise Formidable Shield 2025, putting the U.S. Army’s newest short-range air defense system, the SGT STOUT, to the test through multiple live-fire engagements. The event marked the first time the SGT STOUT, formerly known as the Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense, or M-SHORAD, fired Stinger missiles in an exercise with NATO allies and partners, highlighting the critical role of ground-based air defenses within the Alliance’s integrated air and missile defense architecture.

Air defenders make history at African Lion 2025

In the heat of the rugged Tunisian terrain, the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 52d Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, showcased the abilities of the Avenger Air Defense System for the first time on the African continent. 10th AAMDC honors sacrifices in 80th anniversary of the liberation of Wingen-sur-Moder

WINGEN-SUR-MODER, France – Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command joined local officials and residents on Jan. 12, 2025, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Wingen-sur-Moder. The solemn ceremony honored the bravery and sacrifice of French and American soldiers who fought to free the village from Nazi occupation during World War II.

The command’s role “is more important than ever, given the return of large-scale ground combat to the Continent,” commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa Gen. Darryl Williams said.

10th AAMDC discusses integrated air and missile defense at EUROSATORY 2024

PARIS — EUROSATORY 2024, held from June 17 to 21, is the largest ever defense show and expo in Europe. The event, covering 102,000 square meters, featured over 62,000 visitors from more than 145 countries. Exhibits on the floor of EUROSATORY showcased platforms, technologies, and systems addressing some of the most challenging problems faced by the U.S., its Allies, and partner nations. This year’s exhibit also reflected feedback from the last two years of the war in Ukraine.

POLAND — The 1st Battalion, 62nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment will transfer authority of the U.S. Patriot mission in Eastern Europe to the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on June 17, 2024. The 5-7 ADA rotation signals the U.S. and NATO’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the security and defense posture in Eastern Europe.

U.S. Army Warrant Officer Honored as European Missile Defender of the Year in Warsaw

U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Sanjeev "Jay" Sivasankaran was recognized as the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance’s U.S. Army European Missile Defender of the Year at the 2024 European Missile Defender of the Year conference in Warsaw on May 9. The event, now in its seventh year, recognized air and missile defenders from multiple countries and services, including the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Ukraine.

Integration and innovation discussed at 2024 Fires Symposium

Key leaders from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade attended the 2024 Fires Symposium from May 6-8, 2024, to discuss challenges, opportunities, innovations and integration in air defense and field artillery with leaders from around the world. During the symposium, Brig. Gen. Maurice Barnett, commanding general of the 10th AAMDC, and Col. Ro Clemente, G3 operations officer of the 10th AAMDC, led a panel that focused on lessons learned from the war in Ukraine through the lens of air defense, integrated air and missile defense, and how to build and communicate expertise to U.S., ally and partner leaders at echelon.

5-4 ADA Conducts Saber Strike 2024 Fire Support Coordination Exercise

From April 21 to 22, the 5-4 ADA, alongside the Romanian “Sky Defenders” air defense unit, engaged aerial targets side by side. The fire support coordination exercise, a live-fire exercise, was designed to incorporate direct fire, indirect fire, air defense, and attack aviation, involving multiple NATO allies and partners. This exercise developed integrated air and missile defense and provided an opportunity to showcase the U.S. Army’s newest air defense platform, the M-SHORAD, with its multiple capabilities to support maneuver forces.

10th AAMDC conducts Operation Shield 2024

From April 6-13, Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, participated in Operation Shield 2024. Operation Shield 24 aimed at enhancing combined air defense capabilities and bolstering NATO combat power through integrated air defense live-fire engagements.

10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command hosts Air and Missile Defense high-level talks with Ally and partner nations

SEMBACH, Germany — 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command hosted NATO Allies and partners for discussion on integrated air and missile defense and lessons learned from the Ukraine Conflict on April 9, 2024. Overall, 10 countries participated in the high-level talks. The United States, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Romania, Greece, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Austria and Germany all provided subject matter experts on air defense to foster discussion and build relationships. Of the 10 nations attending, five provided general officers for the talks, including the United States, Austria, Italy, France, and Romania.

The unit, part of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, was the first in the U.S. Army to field and test four prototype Maneuver Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) systems. It provides short-range air defense to protect forces against fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and unmanned aerial system threats.

“This deployment was the first step toward reintroducing integrated maneuver short-range air defense. Our Soldiers, NCOs, and officers have all developed immensely,” said U.S. Army Capt. Michael Archer, Alpha Battery 5-4 commander. “Alpha Battery stepped up to the challenge and achieved greatness throughout the first operational deployment of the M-SHORAD.

Integrating SHORAD into Army maneuver operations is a deliberate process that involves building credible capabilities and conducting joint training and operations with maneuver forces. This deployment has yielded lessons and recommendations for system and operational improvements. During the deployment, Soldiers collaborated with NATO and other partner nations.

With a significant presence across the Eastern Flank, Alpha Battery has played a crucial role in defending infrastructure and supporting U.S. and NATO forces.

“At each location, our forces defend key infrastructure, support U.S. and NATO units, and provide base defense,” Archer said. “The air defense mission here encompasses many different tasks in support of U.S. and NATO goals.”

Alpha Battery, 5-4 Air Defense Artillery Battalion redeploys from NATO’s Eastern Flank

5-4 Air Defense Artillery to participate in DEFENDER 2024

ANSBACH, Germany — Bravo Battery, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, is set to participate in DEFENDER 24's Exercise Saber Strike in Poland. Scheduled to occur April 8 - 30, 2024, Bravo Battery will provide six Maneuver Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) Strykers and over 40 Soldiers to support U.S. Army and NATO forces with short-range air defense during live-fire exercises as part of DEFENDER 24's Exercise Saber Strike in Poland.
